Paediatric Surgery is a discipline of Surgery that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of surgical conditions of the young from the perinatal period to adolescence. It includes minimal access therapy as well as diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies for patients in this age group. It is a broad specialty which is defined by age rather than by organ systems. Specialist paediatric surgery encompasses surgery of congenital anomalies of the newborn, surgery of major conditions in infants and children including neoplasms, hepatobiliary diseases, gastrointestinal conditions, thoracic anomalies, major trauma, paediatric urology, etc. General paediatric surgery encompasses common elective and emergency conditions of children.
